RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our security, shows how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
